Essentially, we recycle and sell unwanted clothing and shoes so we can make a penny. In turn, this gear helps others make a nickel in places where it really matters. The system helps us do this without having to ask you for one penny! If you still want to get into details, read on.
Flagshare has a responsibility to provide our members with an honest and transparent look at the details behind our system. We feel it’s important for you to fully understand our recycling process. You should realize what you’re supporting and how you’re helping on a global and local level.
The shoe/clothing recycling system is just like plastic, metal, or paper recycling operations. Therefore, Flagshare is paid a weight-based sum once pickups are done. This helps us raise funds to sustain our services with no financial obligation or responsibility for you whatsoever. With our system, there are no shipping costs, no equipment cost and no set up costs.
We’re able to keep our recycling system free because of our partnership with Mapa Enterprises. Mapa Enterprises is a for-profit recycler of shoes. Their mission is to inspire people to recycle as much clothing and shoes as possible. Connecting people through the act of recycling is at their core. Flagshare has teamed up with Mapa Enterprises because of our shared perspective on recycling. It is based on a mutual approach to change the way people think about their shoes, clothing and the need for reuse around the globe. For Flagshare, Mapa Enterprises is also an effective and environmentally friendly fundraising opportunity that provides both local and global impact.
The Mapa Enterprises program was developed out of a need identified. Its purpose is to help offset costs associated with various development needs of non-profit organizations. Mapa Enterprises is more than a uniquely effective program that helps fund local charity. It ultimately impacts people in need around the world. Mapa Enterprises makes used shoes and clothing available as affordable resources in developing countries. This system engages in enhancing economic development opportunities through job creation and sustainability both domestically and abroad. Clearly this fits with the core cultural service and exchange philosophy held by Flagstamp/Flagshare!
Every shoe and piece of clothing collected for Flagshare will be distributed for resale and reuse in its original form at various local marketplaces around the developing world. Shoes are shipped to partners in developing areas in Latin America. Here, they are cleaned and resold at an affordable price. This helps build micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. Despite the growing green / environmental movement, most people in the US are unaware that textiles such as shoes can be reused, resold and recycled, creating local economies and jobs both here and abroad. Used shoes are a greatly needed global commodity American-made goods are in high demand. Imagine shoe recycling becoming familiar to us all and easy to perform much like bottle, can, and paper recycling.
The concept is a great opportunity for everyone to participate on any level. For a lot of people, the average closet is a treasure trove of shoes and clothing. Few get regular use and others are no longer wanted or stylish. Mapa Enterprises encourages individuals and families to scour their homes for gently worn items. This approach changes the way people think about their shoes and clothes and the need for reuse around the globe.
Schools, nonprofits, and retailers participate by encouraging their members and customers to get rid of unwanted gear. Mapa Enterprises provides the collection bins, bags, boxes, labor, transportation, publicity, ideas and other recycling tools. They then pay participating nonprofit groups a weight-based sum for their collections. Participating partners with Flagshare, have their collection proceeds sent to Flagshare, Inc. Once your organization joins our system, the company covers collection and transportation costs. The shipping and delivery process is handled by Mapa Enterprises as well.
